If you’re serious about smoking cigars you’ll want a cigar humidor in your home or office. Cigar humidors are extremely important to the proper care and preservation of cigars. Cigars are hygroscopic meaning they respond to the environment they are kept it. Without humidors, expensive and sometimes rare cigars would eventually dry out or rot and die.
The reason cigar humidors are so important is due to the ingredients in a cigar. Cigars are made up almost exclusively of tobacco leaves. These leaves absorb the moisture in the air around them even long after being harvested. If a room is too humid the cigar will absorb too much moisture, eventually breaking down the ingredients and complex flavors of the cigar. On the contrary if the cigar is left in a room that is too dry the cigar will dry out.
A cigar humidor works by controlling the humidity of the area cigars are stored in. Humidors come in a variety of shapes and sizes. Simple humidors include small Spanish cedar boxes capable of storing a few cigars while grand humidors can be as large as entire rooms dedicated to cigar preservation. The most important component to any cigar humidor is the humidifier. A cigar humidifier reads the external humidity in the room as well as regulates the humidity in the humidor. The ideal humidity level for storing cigars is usually between 62 and 70 percent of the relative room humidity. A common misconception is that temperature affects humidity. Cigar humidors do not need to regulate temperature, nor do cigars need to be stored at an ideal temperature to last. However, in order to best care for and preserve your cigars the goal should be storing them at 12 to 15 percent of the total cigar weight as moisture.
Cigar humidors are made in a variety of materials, sizes, and colors but as long as the interior of the cigar humidor is made from Spanish cedar the other materials used in construction make little difference. Most of the differences in materials are cosmetic, such as choosing mahogany over oak, inlaid designs, and jeweled or precious metals hinges and decorations. Some cigar humidors are so ornate and interesting that they make excellent decorations and conversation pieces for you to display in your home or office.
Collecting and smoking cigars is a great hobby and pastime. But it doesn’t matter which brand or style of cigar you prefer, be it ACID cigars or Cubans you’ll want to protect your cigar collection and preserve the integrity of your cigars with a cigar humidor. The best way to keep your cigars lasting a long time is to purchase a high quality humidor, one with a tight seal, Spanish cedar lining, and a quality humidifier and control. Invest in a quality humidor and you’ll be sure to protect and enjoy your cigar collection for a long time to come.
